Lakas Filipino Martial Arts Podcast Episode 6: Guro Willie Laureano – The Unconquerable

Through decades of teaching, Guro Dan Inosanto has created an epic body of work and legacy of students and instructors around the world. But at his Academy in Los Angeles, if you ask the top guys about the top guys, you’ll hear his name. Guro Willie Laureano has trained, trained with and trained alongside some of the best martial artists in the world. Fiercely loyal to Guro Inosanto and intensely devoted to martial art, especially Kali, Guro Willie was forged from a golden age of the Academy. His peers are a virtual who’s who in MMA and Hollywood, and like them Guro Willie has shared his knowledge and skill with some of the most well known names in the UFC and on the big screen.

Guro Willie is also one of my seniors at the Academy under Guro Inosanto. He is a teacher’s teacher, building fighters, guiding coaches and sharpening instructors. His technical grasp not only of drills but their fine details and limitless application is inspiring. Even after years of repping Punyo Sumbrada, his emphasis on holding, grabbing and clearing one morning as he filled in for Guro Inosanto made even the most senior students slow down to refine their technique. His insistence on real time application, sparring and combat has contributed greatly to my own understanding of Panantukan. He is one of the few to still insist on the Inosanto Kali Salutation, and truly embodies the meaning and spirit of the words contained therein. He is a proud teacher, faithful student and steward not only of our lineage, but our Filipino American culture and history.
