I remember reading many years ago, an article on Filipino culture. It wasn’t Sikolohiyang Pilipino (Filipino Psychology) per se, but it had to do with the cultural personality of Filipinos. And I clearly remember it discussing the Filipino’s love of, and communion with nature. The Philippine motto is Maka-Diyos, Maka-tao, Makakalikasan at Makabansa (translated as “For the Love of God, People, Nature, and Country”) and it reminds me of my best friends and neighbors growing up, brothers who would spend days all summer in the woods with their dogs, in the stream and finding the local critters and plants.

Over the years I’ve come to know many Filipinos who are remarkable with their gardens, so it was no surprise to find @iamherbalaria on Instagram and discover the work she is doing to promote the indigenous (pre-colonial) tradition of albularya, of healers and herbalists. It was a privilege to talk with the healer, warrior and albularya herself Lyn Pacificar.
