Lakas Filipino Martial Arts Podcast Episode 1: Guro Pat Finley – The Academic

The mission of Lakas Filipino Martial Arts is to educate, preserve and honor the martial arts from the Philippines as well as those fighting systems born from the Filipino American experience. This vision of this podcast is to capture and share the stories of teachers, instructors and mentors that have not only contributed their life and spirit to martial art, but have helped paint the portrait of who I am today, and what Lakas Filipino Martial Arts continues to develop to be.

Episode 1 is my interview with Guro Pat Finley, one of the longest students and most senior instructors under Guro Dan Inosanto in the Baltimore area. Guro Pat played a role in ultimately connecting Guro Dan with Dr. Gyi of the Bando system, and has been a huge proponent of Burmese boxing since the 70’s. As both an avid martial artist and academic professor, Guro Pat continues to teach actively and is the founder of Plato’s Cave. It is always an invigorating experience and pleasure to be around Guro Pat, listen to his stories and hear his perspectives, even if he’s giving me a hard time. This interview was absolutely all of that.
